If the spaceship in the Lodger crashed, how did it get on top of Craig's house

Maybe it wasn't totally out of control while it was crashing, and that was the best landing the pilots and/or computer could pull off. Maybe it crashed in a field somewhere but the computer was able to move it there on its own, but needed a new pilot in order to fly through time and space again. Maybe for some reason that's where they wanted to land in the first place. There's really no way of knowing.
